BASS INLET, Ludington, Michigan (L.P.), USA

submitted by: bert

GENERAL
If your somewhere in the middle of Michigan's lower peninsula, bored, and graced with a STRONG wind from the west, this could be considered a decent spot. It's located on a beach where a small river flows into the lake(actually an outlet), and is a bit difficult on access. Warm water from the a small lake upstream makes for an interesting water environment. A set of three sandbars are just off the beach.

SPOT RATING: 2*
(1- not so okay, 2-okay, 3-cool, 4-very cool, 5-the ultimate spot)

HOW TO GET THERE
Take 31 North from muskegon, and continue on a spur through the town of pentwater. When you reach "the wishing well" (you'll see), take a left and then find somewhere to park (whispering surf campground) near the river that connects bass lake to lake michigan. Follow sand paths or the river to the inlet. An alternative would be just to drive further north on 31 to ludington and its beach/pier.

WAVES
Shifting sandbars, make for various waves. Less sloppy immediately after storm.

WATER TEMP
Water Temperature in Summer: 60-65 F
Water Temparature in Winter: can't measure temp when its frozen over.

BEST TIME TO SURF
Spring, summer, fall, possibly winter. Best in late august through september.

CROWDS
Not many surf crowds, but lots of vacationers in shallows during summer. (Only go during/before/after storms or in the fall). Make sure its breaking far enough out and walk a little further down the beach to get away from the people.

OTHER COMMENTS:
This is probably the worst spot ever listed, but the water is clean, and no salt.
